Abiru? Probably Not Abi-Station’s Portrait Illustration Maker Random Face

The recent explosion of email to techlife [at] dkworldwide dot com has been great. Thank you. I try to answer all the emails I get, and some are just interesting enough to get published.

Food for Katrina

Dear TechLife,
My son recently inquired about how to make the donated canned food for the Katrina victims taste good. I tried to explain that canned food is non-perishable, which was promptly replied to with, “you mean non-edible?” I decided to look online for good recipes to cook for him and there were a lot of sites, but I couldn’t find exactly what I needed. Any suggestions?
Hungrily yours,
Katie D.

More after the jump

Dear Katie:
It’s time your son became a foodie, someone who uses FoodieView, the recipe meta-search engine. It searches all the other recipe sites from one simple search box. Your son will like the helpful, “what’s in my fridge option”. Just type in some raw ingredients and the site will return a selection from their 110,000 plus recipes. Finally, FoodieView even tells you the number of reviews you might find and how people rated the recipe on the site where the recipe is located. While Hurricane victims might have a lot of the same staples headed their way, hopefully they have a friend who could look up some recipes to make the meals more palatable.

Facetime
Dear TechLife,
My daughter is into instant messenger chatting. She is always on, chatting away. The other day I noticed she had a pretty inappropriate photo of herself as her MSN Buddy Icon. I made a house rule, no more photos as buddy icons. I told her it’s for her own safety. Do you know of any good sites to tell her about for alternative buddy icons?
Mean Dad,
Jeff R.

Dear Jeff,
Child safety online is a major concern. All parents should take an active role in monitoring what their children do and say in chat rooms and IM conversations, just as much as where they visit online. You and your daughter might like a new underground (hence the appeal) fad allowing her to “recreate her face.” Using Abi-Station’s Portrait Illustration Maker, you might even consider doing this together. While the name sounds kind of stodgy, it is because it is directly translated from Japanese, where a 31 year old Web Designer, Abiru built and maintains the site. Face design starts with 28 options and each option has many choices behind it. (Parent warning, under “Hand” for example there are hands holding cigarettes, wine and beer.) You can see examples of hitting the “random” button spread throughout this article. In the end, the options and choices let each person create a very unique buddy icon. Probably the safest point is that it is neck and up only.

Dig to China
Dear TechLife,
A few months back you wrote about Google Maps, and since then there has been an explosion of uses. What’s the most unique one you have seen so far?
Map Addict,
Sara L.

Dear Sara,
There are a lot of unique applications from mapping census data to plotting recent crimes that have crossed my desk. But by far the most unique was the “If I dig a deep hole, where I go to stop?” [sic] site. (see Link List – 3) Ever told a kid, “If you dig that hole long enough you’ll reach China?” Well apparently unless you were in, South America when you said it, it was far from true, assuming of course a straight shot. Playing with this site by Brazilian computer science student from University of Sao Paulo, Luis Felipe, it is clear most of the world’s “other side” is somewhere in the ocean. But it’s well worth checking out, especially for you diggers.

Digging to China? Start in South America.
