Content Consumption
Are you interested in the Japanese toilet craze? Yes, really there is a craze. Today’s digital universe has created global interest in reading and following the developments the Japanese have regarding their bathroom experiences.
Do you sell iPod socks? Yes that’s right, socks. The digital storefront has allowed the smallest micro-entrepreneur to launch a line of iPod Socks, basically a hand knit iPod case.

Do you know someone uprooted by Hurricane Katrina? Okay maybe not. The uprooting of life, by powerful forces of nature is seemingly more commonplace. You are likely to know someone displaced by a job, family or schooling. Interestingly, staying in touch has never been easier.

Do you like to comment on the local, state, national or worldwide politics? Before you say no, ever thought about how high your taxes are? Commentary on politics has always been reserved for those that have an own audience; the digital universe has made the audience one click away.
So what do these four seemingly unconnected topics have in common? They are all Blogs.
More after the jump.
pBlogs
You probably have heard the word, but wondered, “What’s a blog?†Weblogs or Blogs are defined simply as chronological postings on a website around a central theme. The themes can vary wildly as demonstrated.
pBlogs are my shorthand for Personal Blogs. This is often a diary style account of a person’s life. The readership is usually family and friends. Most blog software has a comment feature allowing readers to interact with the article and author. Comments on pBlogs are usually well wishes, advice or inside jokes. Many people use pBlogs to write about such varied things as what they had for dinner, clothes shopping and baby’s first steps. The more interesting pBlogs usually include lots of photos or even audio content. The best thing about pBlogs is they make self-publishing easy, and anyone can do it. These sites are the natural evolution of personal homepages.
During Katrina’s ordeal I followed the adventures of a New Orleans resident through his pBlog mentioned above.
bBlogs
There are two main types of bBlogs. Techlife itself is part of the journalistic approach, a syndicated column and blog (tell me if you like the newly redesigned site!). I write pithy columns that mask as journalism.
Many writers use their bBlog as an electronic outlet for their viewpoints. The aforementioned political blog, Powerline is one. The Japanese Toilet mention is really a gadget blog, Gizmodo, written with as slightly humorous, slightly newsworthy blurbs. Both of these bBlogs are written and supported financially through advertising. The other type is a corporate bBlog that the writer(s) announce new products and services on behalf of a corporation.
There are crossovers. An author started out writing and gaining traffic, as a pBlog and then hit on a business idea, like iPod Socks. The writer / micro-business usually doesn’t focus on pushing too much product, but it pops up every now and again.
Techlife Blog Award
Find the most interesting bBlogs and pBlogs and then visit the Techlife article page and nominate them via a comment post. The best one in each category will win something extra special; full coverage in an upcoming article and be awarded the “Techlife 2006 Reader’s Blog Award†with snazzy graphic award emblem!
To help with the nomination process here are two blog search engines used to write this article, Google Blog Search and Technorati.

I just found this section of the Techlife website. The pictures make it more interesting than text only. It is a way that i can read your columns even though I am not in the delivery area of the newspaper.

I’d be grateful for information about what exactly a ‘bblog’ is, and why it is given that name.

Dave:
I realize I didn’t define a “bBlog” like I did a “pBlog” in the article. A bBlog is a Business Blog, either where a person is a writer doing the blog for their own business, or a corporation who has a blog for their employees, partners and clients. Both fall under my definition of a bBlog.
Thanks for asking.
Dave
PS Your comment was caught in my spam filter, not sure if it really was or not, but I decided to post it, since it is a great question. Let me know if you “really” exist.
