Dave,

I agree that Linux has made major inroads over the past five years (we are about 75% Linux at my job), I am still waiting for the day where at least a third of the PCs at Best Buy will be Linux machines. Then I will be ready to sing the praises of Linux!

@Charles - One more thing. Linux and Apple's penetration is small, but recent years have seen applications across the board increase the popularity of the OS.

More people interact with Linux than ever realize it. They just don't know it cause it has a shiny interface.

@Charles - Interesting observation. I think Google has had the chance to see Blackberry's penetration and now Apple committing to Enterprise usage.

Blackberry has recently actually made their largest growth in the consumer marketplace, according to their recent 2008 earnings.

I think with Google's global reach and brand name, and solid hardware partner lineup, along with savvy developer programs they are going to make life difficult for other players.

Apple and Blackberry are hardware and software.

Microsoft is software with hardware partners.

Palm is a mix but certainly losing much ground.

Motorola, Nokia, Samsung etc are really hardware makers and looking for an OS that can beat Apple and RIM. I think this is a good candidate to at least try.

Although this may sound like a good idea, so many people depend heavily on Blackberry that they will be unlikely to switch. Companies may be hard pressed to show this as a viable option since people can download them for free.

Remember, Linux is free and still only has a minor share of the overall market.
