Thank you for replying, Lance.

Agreed, as an ancient Roman wrote, "De gustibus non est disputandum," There's no arguing about taste. :-)

@James - Thank you for your question.

Feature selections are based on the following criteria:

1. Does the image stimulate or confront you? Does it do anything for you?
2. Is the image novel? Does it make you curious or grab your attention?
3. Does the image invoke a personal response?
4. Do you find the image thought provoking?
5. What are the overall qualities like? Composition, focus, color, tones, etc.

The process is very subjective of course and I do tend to assert a bit of personal taste into the selections. In addition, I will often take cues from the community as well. If an images has received an overwhelming response from the community then that image has a great chance of being featured.

Thanks for the question James.

Regards,
Lance

@ James - great question...I'll ping Lance and see if he can comment more on this for us.

PS - As for me I picked the image of the Tiger included here (as a bonus for the online readers) as my favorite image.

While I didn't look at every single image on fotoblur.com...I chose this one based on the composition, the timing, the mood. I feel energized by the raw power of the animal in action.

At the same time, the other photos used in the article were the exact opposite, both extremely calm and peaceful filling me with tranquility.

But I do await Lance's reply as well.

Enjoyed your article, Dave, but question one word in Lance's reply to your question about his favorite photo of 2010: i.e.,"opinion."

More specifically, he replied, "I select, based on my opinion, the best images of the day."

What is his opinion's grounding? What are its informed, reasoned, and considered roots?

For example, the objective of a college course I'm scheduled to teach is to critically and creatively discuss the philosophical (aesthetic, epistemological, ethical, and metaphysical) roots of our own and classic photos.

Is Lance's opinion more than mere subjective musing?

Looking forward to your reply.

Best,
James Paradiso
