Welcome to Techlife, where the crossroads of Technology and Life intersect. The syndicated print column is published exclusively from this blog, a form of Digital Ethnography. Comments may appear in print.
Well…Santa Claus is done with presents for 2006. But no rest for the weary, he’s right back to collecting presents for 2007. You didn’t get a Wii or Playstation 3? Or even an X-box 360? Never fear, Santa’s got your back. If you could just lend him a hand.
Snow Line, another in our Friends of Line Rider series is a game built on the Line Rider engine. If you liked Lemmings (bonus browser friendly game!) and Line Rider then you will like this puzzle based game. I got to level 5 before I realized I needed to get this column written. How far did you get?
Do you need to let off a little steam? Maybe kick someone’s “armageddon”? Today, TechLife brings you the five minute diversion known as Stick Arena.
Can you really play a multi-CD game at work? I don’t think so.
Stick Arena is a flash-based game requiring an internet connected machine and the ability to use your keyboard and mouse in concert. The arrow keys move your “Stick Figure” while the mouse is your action button to swing a baseball bat or fire a shotgun. Rated “T” for teens due to mild violence. (more…)
Well, the editor has the final column. Thanks to everyone for making the first completely online blog written column a success. Now a few interesting things….
a few words differ, just cause it made almost zero sense to a reader holding a paper copy
the photos are the same, but I did grab the image from the Ski Battle post, even though only the Line Rider post made the article
the photos are all re-captured due to print requiring a higher resolution image
Funny story - I used to capture the high res images first and then create a blog friendly image from the original. It was much faster and easier to do it in reverse. This was an unexpected benefit.
So now I approach an odd situation…There are still 10 days left in Decemeber and even more until the column hits the newstand in January. I think for February’s column I will pull posts from this one until my next deadline. That way it is a full month. Make sense?
Any questions or comments, please let me know how to make this better.

(part of the print process exposed to online readers)
I realized that to be true to my experiment of writing this exclusively online, the readers of TechLife who only read the syndicated print column may find some of my posts a bit awkward. For example I was finishing up the January column for my editor when I realized I needed an ending, which turned into this post. (Hmm, maybe this is odd for online readers too.)
I needed to explain to the syndicated readers why they should visit the online edition. First I have a few more links in every post that I can’t reproduce in the print edition. More importantly you can see the “sister posts”. For example the multiple posts on Line Rider and on True Combat:Elite from this month, complete with cool video footage and additional photos. Finally comments! Sure I love your email, but a comment on the site the whole world gets to see forever. Try it. It’s easy.
Can you hear that? That rapping at my chamber door, it is my editor wanting more.
Last month I declared we would be moving the whole column online. That meant posting all month in short bursts. A more typical blogging schedule for you the readers. Giving you TechLife more often. Did you get your feed readers ready? Did you subscribe? You know it’s free right?
As I was preparing I realized I need a bit of an introduction to the column each month to make my editor happy. So that rapping, tapping on my door is my editor and you, the reader, wanting more. Enough! Here you go, enjoy 2007 with a roar.
TechLife could not resist adding to the Friends of Line Rider series, with this holiday installment. Warm up some hot chocolate and get in the holiday spirit. Ski Battle takes place in a winter wonderland, complete with snowmen, reindeer, ski lodges, and even holiday music. It also expands on the classic Line Rider palatte with a color palette.
I know we are in the middle of a series of How to’s for installing True Combat: Elite, but everyone needs a break from the hard work of installing one game, so they might play simple time wasting games. Don’t say you weren’t warned, this is the first in TechLife’s series of “Friends of Line Rider”.
Line Rider is the original. What is it? A simple Flash game (works in any browser with Flash) that let’s you create a track for your rider. You draw a line, and let gravity take over. Of course just like any addiction, some people have created some great Line Rider creations. Get inspired with the video below of a great ride. What can you create? Let us know.
As we jump in with two feet today, I felt it would be cool to use another immersive metaphor, first person shooter (FPS) games and this one is FREE! For those unfamiliar, this a game where your on-screen view matches the perspective your character is seeing the world. An example:
A trailer for a free video game. Gotta love the dedication.
You hear a noise above you, you actually need to make your character look up to see it, from the first person view. The shooter part should be pretty self explanatory.
TechLife has news! Good News? Bad News? I know you are dying to know. You might think you even guessed it from the title of this column. Keep reading and let?Ts see if you are right.
Remember the last column? ??Passion Publising, Get Paid.?? My challenge stirred something deep in the heart of TechLife readers. The result is we have been busy this past month helping quite a few readers get their blogs setup. The schedule is filling up for next month too. It has been really exciting. Contact us if you want to get publishing. This is not the last time this topic will come up.
