TechlifeÂ=often focuses on how technology and life intersect.Â= Today a bit more on life, than tech.Â=Â=A friend of theÂ=site, Scubaology,Â=postedÂ=about this frill shark, caught on film.Â= Thanks to the power of video we get to see a shark that very few, if any, people have ever seen alive due it’s choice of living 600m below the surface of the ocean.

Lombard Street in San Francisco is known as the most crooked street in the world. As someone who has driven down the street it is a unique and popular tourist attraction in a city with the likes of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and countless museums like the SFMOMA.
But maybe you can’t make it there anytime soon, let Flash Earth help. From flash guru Paul Neave’s comes the comparison tool of all things maps. It is the ultimate maps mashup. As the image shows you can see up to eight different views of a location. Not all locations have imagery for all eight views. Here are the visuals from Google Maps, Micrsoft Virtual Earth, and Ask.com comparing their view of Lombard Street all taken from the identical coordinates.
See the comparisons after the jump.

Reader EmailsComments Off on iPhone unboxed Exclusive! – See an iPhone in the wild.

My un-named techidol friend just got his iPhone and was kind of enough to take a bunch of photos of the unboxing and email them to Techlife, exclusively!
He and I got our Sidekick’s on the same day; day 1. But he is an Apple fan, so I can understand his lust. (Why is there a windows PC in this shot I will never know?)
I was pretty shocked as Steve Jobs said they wouldn’t be out until June in the Keynote. But you VIPs tend to get them in advance.
Another photo after the jump…

Sports and RecreationComments Off on Daily Lit – Loved before it was blogged.
Back in November, Techlife shared Daily Lit with our inner circle, when I posted some beta testing comments for them. I continued using DailyLit. (More on that below the jump…)
First what is DailyLit? Their tagline sums it up best: “Too busy for books? Read them by e-mail.” What books you might ask? A lot. My last count was more than 250 titles. But here’s the smart thing, who wants “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy as a giant email attachment. It would be crazy! So Daily Lit breaks it down into manageable parts. Granted this literary work is broken down into 675 parts one of the largest but other books are quite a bit less.
The break down is your call. “Daily” is most common but you can accelerate that if you really like a book with a simple click.

The hipster PDA by Merlin Mann of 43folders.com fame dates back to September 2004. It has served many people very effectively but of course there is always room for improvement.
In August of 2006 Techlife’s column was about PocketMod.  PocketMod is a single sheet of paper created easily online and printed on a single sheet of paper. It’s unique feature is the wealth of modules the author created.Â
Techlife reader Matt, recently has been commenting on how he uses the PocketMod and how he plans on using it. I thought it was interesting and others might find it useful. Feel free to join the discussion.

InformationalComments Off on The first transport is away…
Well, the editor has the final column. Thanks to everyone for making the first completely online blog written column a success. Now a few interesting things….
- a few words differ, just cause it made almost zero sense to a reader holding a paper copy
- the photos are the same, but I did grab the image from the Ski Battle post, even though only the Line Rider post made the article
- the photos are all re-captured due to print requiring a higher resolution image
- Funny story – I used to capture the high res images first and then create a blog friendly image from the original. It was much faster and easier to do it in reverse. This was an unexpected benefit.
So now I approach an odd situation…There are still 10 days left in Decemeber and even more until the column hits the newstand in January. I think for February’s column I will pull posts from this one until my next deadline. That way it is a full month. Make sense?
Any questions or comments, please let me know how to make this better.

Sports and RecreationComments Off on Step 2: Preparing for True Combat: Elite – Video Drivers

Getting your computer ready for a software install can often make the process a lot less painless. And I am all about making things a bit easier.
I visited the Windows Installation Guide for True Combat: Elite. As I mentioned I am not a real gamer, but I know enough that if your machine isn’t powerful, you can’t run the games. So looked over the “Preparation” section carefully.

Published ArticleComments Off on Passion Publishing. Get Paid.
Me? Have a blog? Why?
Do you make the best LEGO creations ever? Are you the gardening expert people ask about deadly nightshade? Maybe you breed and are uber-knowledgeable about champion poodles? Whatever your passion is, there are undoubtedly others in the world that share your passion and see you as an expert. Today TechLife is going to take your passion and turn it into stardom. (we have a few blog headers sprinkled throughout)
Â
Before reading further, you must answer one question: Do you have a passion? Examples include golf, scuba diving, solving complex math problems, even using dryer lint in interesting ways. Did you answer yes? Great keep reading. Did you answer no? Perfect we will randomly assign you a passion to choose from, and yes the following all count as passions: watching television, reading the newspaper, eating, going to work, playing video games. Pick one.
Great now everyone reading this column has at least one passion, let’s publish.

Â
Love the LifePoster Â
Click. Click. Click. Snapping digital photos has never been easier. Sharing them is getting pretty boring these days, with all the websites allowing a hum-drum interface that is basically the same. TechLife is always looking for new ways to spice up photo sharing, and today we have great entry, in the free Postcard Viewer!
People love their digital cameras. They love them as low-end phones, high-end DSLRs, and handy point and click models. Readers of TechLife also love our Picasa LifePoster article.  It still gets comments. I think people enjoy finding unique ways to use their digital photos other than printing them out one at a time. This article is considered “graduate level†and assumes the reader has read the previous LifePoster article and the first Picasa article from TechLife.Â

SoftwareComments Off on The Swiss Army Piece of Paper

MacGyver’s Notebook
To any origami master, a crisp, single sheet of paper can be turned into a beautiful creation with just a few folds. The Japanese art of taking a simple object and turning it into something beautiful is just that, artistic. In TechLife, “the useful†is much more my area of expertise. Television’s poster-child of usability was MacGyver, who seemingly every week used duct tape and a paperclip to defeat the bad guys. One utility item MacGyver always carried was his Swiss Army knife, a multi-utility tool about the size of a cigarette lighter.
While there doesn’t appear to be a revival of the television show, the idea of a utility tool in all areas of life is always appealing. I have a special treat for you today, something I call MacGyver’s notebook, also known as a PocketMod.

Â
Live is Better
While some people think live albums are just a sales ploy, most fans would much rather see their favorite band performing live than listen to a studio album. Seeing all the members working together to create beautiful music onstage is part of the whole experience.
In the past “your band†could play together on stage, but when writing lyrics or tracking things like album sales, it was tough to keep everyone playing the same song at the same time. Even worse while things like MySpace.com made creating a band editable site easier, creating a community was pretty difficult. So our word for the day is collaboration, specifically online collaboration.   Â

 Newest Agency Takes Shape
Through an unmarked door, up a narrow staircase, past about two thousand DVDs (give or take), sits the operation center of one of the most powerful agencies in the world. From this non-descript headquarters, a 3-5 minute video on demand message is regularly sent out to the global masses. Are you being informed about the latest in high tech from International Director Cali Lewis of the G.I.A?

Eiffel to Empire
Say you find yourself in CBS’s The Amazing Race or maybe just the urge to visit the Big Apple hits you. How fast could you get there? Pretty fast you say. Now the bonus, can you reach NYC’s Planet Hollywood and tell us what’s across the street? Easy! Not so fast, we want to know what’s across 45th Street, not across Broadway. How about finding out before you arrive using only your PC?

SoftwareComments Off on Life Poster: A Picasa How-To

Happy 1 year Birthday Life Poster
The holidayà-?s are over. (sigh) The gifts have been opened. (sigh) You have mountains of digital photos (with your new camera) from Thanksgiving through New Yearà-?s totaling 100 shots? 1000 shots? 5000 shots? (sigh)
Not a problem if you recall TechLifeà-?s November 2005 article about Picasa; an easy to use and free of charge tool to organize digital images. While Picasa is great for digital organization, it also has a few hidden tricks; one of them is a Life Poster. A Life Poster is a collection of photos grouped together in a single image. Usually they focus around a specific subject. The best part is they are easy to make, and Picasa makes them even easier.
