Reading by Christine RondeauWe live in a world of instants.  Instant Oatmeal.  Instant Publishing. Instant Messaging.  The latter is a simple form of communication that allows two or more users to chat in a real-time manner using their keyboard. The big instant messaging tools are AIM, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger.

Techlife interviewed Bill Herred who recently released two new instant messaging tools called IM Bots for AIM users.  If you haven’t given an IM bot a try yet, you just might after reading the column.

Are you reading this in print?  Please try out the online version of Techlife to see all the great posts from this past month covering subjects such as, addictive casual games, Wired’s new How To site, and even Techlife’s write up from the nice folks over atPopular Photography” magazine.

Prof GilzotMost Techlife readers know I use Trillian for instant messaging because we have covered them before. I have also mentioned AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) bots when I wrote about FeedCrier. An AIM bot is a buddy you add to your buddy list but instead of a real person the bot is a computer that can answer questions, usually with a tight focus. AIM Bots are available wherever you can IM including the iPhone.

A great example of this is AOLYellowPages, a bot that lets you pull up nationwide (USA) listings with a few quick pecks to the keyboard. People love this bot, which was recently in retirement refinement and not-delivering any results. I am happy to report it is back.

We recently caught up with Bill Herred who is the guy-behind-the-guy of Prof Gilzot, a new AIM bot for SAT Prep, targeted towards high school students. He is also behind IM Street a stock focused AIM Bot.

Wired How To Wiki logoTechlife has clicked an online ad! Ok admit it, you have too, sometime in the not so distant past. Sure there are millions of them, but this one got my attention, nice job Wired How To’s. No, I am not republishing the advertisement, instead they are getting a full post. I think that is more than they hoped for when running their ad campaign.

I often have clients ask, “How do I get my website get traffic? Can you help me?” My answer is simple think multi-pronged. By this I mean no one single way is the best, but a combination of methods certainly works wonders. In this case, I have read many DIY websites, but Wired How To’s is today’s flavor – and it is wiki flavor, mmm tasty.

iPhone image courtesy of WiredEach week they highlight one of the How To’s, this one How To hack your iPhone is very interesting. They rate each project with a skill level, so you get a feel for how easy or difficult something will be for you to accomplish. Let us know if you try a How To and your results. Or if you post one, I always like to check out what our readers can do.

The site debuted in July 2007 but has already quite a few articles. It helps that their staff is working hard on this too. This site is culled by staff members but certainly has a fair share of user input.

Note: Need assistance making your site more clickable? Want to increase the visitors? Want your own custom multi-pronged approach? Contact Dave at helpme [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

Beet.TV LogoLook out! Beet.TV has a long tail! “You mean like a monkey?” No, silly. The long tail* of getting attention and now with an avalanche of new content on Techlife TV it looks like they will sustain it. We welcome Beet.TV to our channel with an amazing 50+ new videos for our viewers. It took me by surprise, but I started watching and couldn’t get enough.

Beet.TV interviews Google’s Hunter Walk about the Diet Coke and Mentos videos.

Andy Plesser, (a Jerry Springer look-alike?) is one of the rare “don’t look at me” journalists. It almost appears he doesn’t want to be a star. But his amateur-style trick to stay mostly off-camera and off-microphone compels the viewer to want a bit more Andy. I really like the way he edits himself out of asking the question, since he knows it is not about him. Sure sometimes he appears on camera, and his excitement is like my own. He fumbles for words or even can’t get out his question, but his interviewee connects with him. I saw quite a few people understand his intention and just run with it.

I really like what Beet.TV is doing and hope to see more of their show on Techlife TV.

Note: What I think happened is Beet.TV’s catalog of video was indexed all at once as some of the video is a little older.

* The Long Tail Effect started as an article by Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine and is now a very popular book.

Popular Photography and Imaging American PhotoBlogging is a pretty cool way to write my syndicated column. Recently other peers in MSM (Mainstream Media) and the blogosphere have been taking notice of Techlife. Our recent brush with the paparazzi came a bit more literally. “Popular Photography and Imaging” magazine and it’s sister publication “American Photo” magazine each have a blog.
In a recent post on the blog PopPhoto.com| FLASH they wrote about the DIY project How to make a LifePoster with Picasa article. They added this great idea:

Pop Photo Blog

…use this technique with camera phone images. Most images from phones are far too low of a resolution to do anything with except create avatars or use as backgrounds on your phone. Using this technique, you can gather a bunch of images from your phone (or many phones over the years) and compile them together into a very printable poster that you can hang.

Flashstar by Oliver Petry“Hey can I have a flash introduction on my site?” It is tough answer, but as a web developer who focuses on both marketing and technology, my answer is usually no. I am excited that people know what Flash is and one of its many possible uses, but cinematic introductions for a regular website don’t help most sites.

Flash focuses on interactivity, and engaging the user. Techlife has reviewed quite a few flash projects recently:

Vote 2 by Steve Woods

Which one did you like the best? Let us know in the comments.

Techlife TV has a great video interview with Hilman Curtis, a flash expert and author.  His newest book, “Creating short films for the web” should be read by anyone looking to be creative online. In the next few years I expect more and more flash projects to be built and used. But I am sure I missed some favorites, let me know which ones.

Chime.tv LogoA new chapter begins, Techlife TV. Wait a sec, didn’t we just read about Techlife TV with the posts about Steve Jobs and SeaDragon and Star Wars Robot Chicken? Well kinda, sorta.

Here’s the back story. A few weeks ago we wrote about Chime.tv it was also featured in the syndicated column. No extra software downloads, tons of content, a great interface, the list goes on; what’s not to love?

We built Techlife TV and started selecting videos from the column and others we thought readers might enjoy. After our initial post, Taylor McKnight, must have been reading and brainstorming with Chirag Mehta because they contacted me and have asked me to program the new Techlife TV on Chime.tv’s Premium Channel page. Sometimes at Techlife we cover technology in gadgets or the web, or even just computers. But technology is driven by people, and some people drive technology based on their past to make the future better. As long time readers of this column know I am not an evangelist for Apple, Inc., but I give Apple plenty of kudos for their success and that starts from the top. Steve Jobs has all sorts of stories surrounding him. He is a rock star, movie star and super star all rolled into one. His value as a person in our society is widely debated but for the 14 minutes and 30 seconds he spoke to the Stanford University graduating class of 2005 he imparted a bit of his story which in turn really became his-tory. Watch, listen and learn on Techlife TV.
Thanks to super fan reader Dave S. for his continued great links. Do you have a great link? Tell us in the comments.

Bub Hub Business Networking LogoToday BubHub comes out of stealth mode. Techlife readers may recall helping name the business networking group and things going quiet. BubHub springs from the end of inBubbleWrap, a site about business books and growing smarter in business. The leader inBubbleGuy, is stepping down from his post of writing a daily blog about the books and giving them away to readers.

Figures Education 3 by Sanja GjeneroDo you think your Business Networking could be better? BubHub aims to help make it better. I have kicked it off by getting BubHub set up as a Linked In group. (Linked In is a free online business service.) The group setting allows us to begin to network with a few nice bells and whistles. To join the group I need to invite you and for that we need an email address. Click here to fill out your email address to be invited. (If this does not work, add a comment to this post and we will use the email to invite you.) Both people who already have a Linked In account or are those new to Linked In are welcome to join the BubHub Group.

This is just the beginning of BubHub. Our members are some of the smartest, well-read people in business. We want your smarts to help make BubHub even better. When you take a photo you resign yourself to the fact that you captured the photo at a certain place in both time and space. (Already to deep, just skip to Techlife TV’s video.) Basically you click and shoot capturing at the moment in time and from your angle. Combining photo collages, photo stitching, massive amounts of visual data Blaise Aguera y Arcas recently demoed SeaDragon, a Microsoft Labs project at TED, a conference on new ideas.

Blaise presents the fact that our current interactions with visual data is very limited. He feels the future of data will allow quicker navigation and more complete views. I like the way he shows off an entire Charles Dicken’s novel and is easily able to zoom into a single letter from the whole book. This type of data interaction is clearly what Professor Wesch meant with Digital Ethnography. But clearly the demo’s pinnacle is the Notre Dame Cathedral shown from any angle using only images from Flickr.

Thanks to Techlife reader and contributor Dave for sending this in, and his comment “looks like this guy built ‘Minority Report’ is spot on.” If you have something interesting send it to reviewme [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

Note: The video is incorrectly titled “Blaise Aguera y Arcas demos Photosynth”, the first thing he says is, “This is SeaDragon.”

Note 2:  Techlife TV is part of Chime.tv and they have a whole TED series.

Google Docs and Spreadsheets new main interface

Techlife logged into Google Docs and found a brand new interface. We have been using online collaborative word processing and spreadsheets more and more with clients and among the staff, so this was a nice find.

Google Docs has changed a lot since we last wrote about them. But the recent few changes have really put some polish on these tools.

Two of the newest changes are:

 • Looking pretty – The entire document list has been given a complete visual overhaul – new icons, more content, and better organizational controls. We know users spend a lot of time here and we aim to make it feel more like home.
 • Getting organized – Almost from the day we launched people have been clamoring for folders. They’re here! Even cooler, our new folders continue to work like the tags they’ve replaced – your old tags are automatically converted to folders and documents can live in more than one folder at a time. Organizing your documents is as easy as dragging and dropping a document to a folder. We’ve also included special controls for seeing only those documents created by you or shared with a particular person.

I also like the “drag and drop” interface that we are already comfortable using in a desktop interface for managing the documents on the main page. Google has cleaned up the ease of using the site. The added some new search technology (wonder where they thought of that!)

Google Spreadsheets now with charts and graphs - Pie, Bar, Scatter and more

Previously the Google Docs team did added snazzy chart support in Spreadsheets. Check out the ease of creating and maintaining your pie, bar, scatter and more types of charts and graphs.

So Google Docs is “Getting Better All the Time” as The Beatles sang.

books, books by Sanja Gjenero

Techlife 1
It’s official, I just completed my first entire book via email, thanks to Daily Lit. Daily Lit is a favorite of Techlife, allowing readers to be sent small pieces of books via email on a schedule for free. We paused our novel when the workload got heavy and then resumed after sometime. It’s on to book two, which is only about 1/3 the size.

Daily Lit 1+

The day we finished our first book, the folks at Daily Lit also released a bunch of new features worth mentioning. Email length can be controlled to offer longer installments. The schedule can be a little less “daily”, with options for once a week. For our French and Italian readers new books are going up in these languages and a new RSS feed for “new books” is available.

They have released a few other features, such as subscribe via RSS instead of email and a “what I’m reading” tool, called a Book Roll. They also have added a variety of other written words, such as poetry and books released in the creative commons.

Finally don’t feel bad about stopping a book, or only having read a few so far. Albert who maintains the Daily Lit blog, has only completed 2 and is working on his third. Remember this is not about speed, but about enjoying stories that have shaped the world we live in and influence a lot of the other art, movies, television and video games we see today.
