Calendar by Hilde VanstraelenWe are always exploring technology for our clients and one of the biggest areas of growth with our client base has been blogging. Thanks in part to Techlife’s success, clients often ask us to help them start a “successful” blog, at which we laugh quite a bit — both the knowing laugh and the naive laugh and finally the “let’s talk” laugh. Outside tools are very useful in blogging and Tehcnorati which creates a Technorati Profile is no exception.

Clueless yet? Drop us an email and let’s talk. helpmeblog [at] dkworldwide [dot] com

Open for DesignMy readers are really the best. A long time print and online reader sent along the link to the site “Open for Design” which was built by MSN, a Microsoft company. If this site were a person it would wear sunglasses at night, as part of the uber-cool group. It clearly took the idea of being “open for design” and tried to improve on it.

I think it failed in many ways, but because they are subtle failures it could almost be seen as successful. When you arrive, you don’t really know much about why you are there. The pretty flash interface has some real nice lines, and a design that pulls you in. With five simple large boxes that are buttons you roll your mouse around and explore.

But then it gets confusing. You quickly notice an “Issuse No. 7: Light”. Curious? I was. Why would a website have an “issue number”. Looking further you see the various boxes had titles and subjects. A “Light” goes on! This must be some sort of e-zine (electronic magazine.)

Joost is hot.

Techlife’s Original

Valleywag's Joost logo or Techlife's Logo

Valleywag’s timing is perfect

Ok, I know this is really not “my logo” it’s Joost’s logo. But this specific image I created for Techlife’s Joost articles. I spent the time to create it and thanks to the way Joost‘s site displays their logo in a flash animation it is pretty cool that both Nick Denton and I captured this logo at exactly the same moment.  After being alerted by readers about the logo capture similiarity, I originally claimed that Nick had swiped the image.  But after watching the multiple minute looping flash animation, I realize we both just have a great sense of timing.  Valleywag used it for their Joost finance post.

I have written about and participated in both Nick Douglas projects and Nick Denton projects as a good standing member of the community, hopefully they will consider this moving ahead. As we certainly have a matching eye and keen sense of timing, I would be happy to have Gawker hire me, as I do visual design for many of my clients. I could certainly create much more interesting imagery, if they so desire.

Thanks to a heads up from a few of you eagle eye readers on this.

Ewoks, Star Wars and George Lucas all made for TV?GeekBrief.tv just stunned me with this revelation, that George Lucas is making a new Star Wars movies, but this time for television! A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Lucas made some lame Ewok movies. So bad they were, made for television only, with no theatricial release and apparently he wants to try that again. (I wonder if they will use this classic “worst trailer ever” styling.)

I did actually like the styling and story of the animated Clone Wars, but can live-action movies really work? As I write this I think with all the CGI characters these days it just might work. I remain on the fence, but of course will watch.
I am stunned Lucas would go this route. Are you? Comment here.

Many experienced internet users have made the switch to Firefox, a web browser built by the Mozilla open source group. I know a lot Techlife readers are less likely to just switch from Internet Explorer or AOL’s web browser, because “Why switch, this is so easy and all my bookmarks/favorites are in Internet Explorer or AOL?” Today, I am asking to you think about switching.

While many sites tout the new features, extensions or the browsing speed of Firefox compared to other browsers, I have found the most compelling feature to date. Restore a previous session. This simple feature understands that brownouts, blackouts, kids, dogs, cats, husbands, wives and even your foot is often the culprit in your computer restarting. Here’s the genius part…

  1. You are surfing doing a big research project on your trip to London
  2. You have 5 to 15 windows open with flight times, hotels, car rentals, places to visit, even a make-your-own-map of your itinerary
  3. As you are dreaming about being knighted by the queen, your foot slips off the desk and hits the power button — restarting your computer
  4. Quick before you say “Oh, no!” which browser were you using?
  5. In Internet Explorer, I hope you took note of the sites you had open because all is lost otherwise
  6. In Firefox, the restore the previous session feature when you reboot allows you with a single push of the button get back ALL the pages you had open previously.

Even writing this column, I have 25 windows open at a time. Restoring them has never been easier and even makes me wish other times in life had a restore button. So yes…it has happened to me that the PC crashed or I shut down or restarted and this little feature makes it so much less scary than before. Give Firefox a try and let me know what your favorite feature or extension is in the comments.

Techlife’s recent article about Digital Ethnography based on the video “Web 2.0 – The Machine is Us/ing Us” by Professor Michael Wesch has really blossomed garnering over 1.2 million views since our last article in February 2007, to total 2.2 million views and counting. The topic of information and the processing of it, certainly has become of interest to the readers of this column.

Recently the above video was sent to me by a loyal reader (Thanks Allan!) . Titled, “Did You Know; Shift Happens – Globalization; Information Age” this video by educator Karl Fisch, has had about 500,000 views so far. What do you think of it? I am really interested in reading your opinions of this video in comparison to the Web 2.0 video. I have reposted that video after the break. I am also interested in any personal stories with your feelings about globalization and the information waterfall we all encounter daily. Comment here. (more…)

Joost is hot.

Techlife recently posted about our invite to Joost, the free online video network currently in beta testing. We offered up an invite to people who commented in that thread. Then I ran into a snag installing and each person who requested an invite instead got a personal email from me. Basically stating, thanks for your interest but we couldn’t hand out anything until we got it working as the invites were in the software itself.

We got it working!

I plan on posting a review next week of by far one of the coolest applications I have seen in quite a long time. We also plan on providing a lucky winner the chance to try it out and tell us their thoughts. Watch for our review and our contest post.

Note: As of right now the contest has NOT started, so if you want to enter, check back or sign up for our feed. Comments in this thread will NOT enter you in the contest.

Note 2: We have never locked a thread before on Techlife, but the original Joost thread is going to be locked to avoid confusion. For our Techlife superfans who commented on the original post, an added bonus, one of those select few will ALSO get an invite to Joost from us.

Dear Cali header by dk worldwide
A new header for DearCali.com?

A good friend of mine, Neal Campbell, producer of GeekBrief.TV recently asked me, “I know what you do, but what….do you do?” Most of you know me as Dave Kaufman, creator of Techlife. Let’s go behind the curtain in this multi-part column and I will give you a bit more about what I do. Today we cover design and branding.

Cue the time machine as the question above was not the start of our conversation. It all started when Neal asked if I could review a new site that was part of the GeekBrief.TV family, Dear Cali, a Tech Answers and Advice blog by Cali Lewis host of GeekBrief.TV. I get asked this all the time in Techlife. Now by review, he meant provide him feedback, make suggestions, critique and generally give an impression of this new site, some companies call it beta testing too. I wrote Neal a nice email pointing out various small and large observations, suggestions and even a new business idea!

Reading by Christine RondeauThis was a crazy “location” month for Techlife, starting with the request to translate the column into Japanese.  Quite an honor.  A student in New Zealand used our reviewme [at] dkworldwide [dot] com email for his creation, Searchbot, and we created “Techlife-a-tron”.  We posted unique instructions on exactly how to get from New York to London.  We were also contacted by Joost out of Europe and reviewed Chick Chick Boom designed by a German company.  And that leads us to the two stories that actually made the cut, which also focused on location, one in real estate and one in the online mapping area.  This was  huge month for visitor’s comments to Techlife, visit the site and see all the smart comments made by your fellow readers.

New York to London with Google Maps

Google Maps is a favorite around the Techlife offices.  After our recent article on “Make Your own Google Maps” a long time friend and reader Cindy from Boston sent us the simple email outlining Google Maps directions from New York to London. We were a bit puzzled, until we followed her instructions.  Here was the email tip we were sent:

DO THIS:

1. go to www.google.com
2. click on “maps”
3. click on “get directions”
4. type “New York” in the first box
5. type “London” in the second box
(hit get directions)
6. scroll down to step #23

ha ha ha ha

To lazy – we have saved the link from The Big Apple to Big Ben right here.

Got a tip for us, send it in to techlifetips [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

iPhone size comparison with Sidekick and Blackberry
We saved this information for today, as it is 4/11 (if you are in the USA.) And if you are in the USA you know all about the 411, and we aren’t talking about slang meaning “giving out information” but the national directory assistance that most landlines and mobile phones charge upwards of $1.25 (know something higher? Stick it in the comments.) Well “The Google” is pumping out the 411 in a big way with free SMS information and free directory assistance.

After Techlife’s recent article on getting the price of any house via your mobile’s SMS, the reaction was really positive. People love their mobile and getting information on it. Google has had an SMS service for a long time now. Simply send an SMS to “GOOGL” or “46645” with say “Pizza and your ZIP Code” and a few seconds later a quick text message reply has you eating cheesy goodness, or at least ordering it. You can also get things like flight and airline information. Google’s free service wants to help everyone, especially frustrated travelers.
But today is 4/11 so we will give you two pieces of information on this “The 411 Day”. Google also recently released Google 411. Another free service from the ominpresent dealers of information.

Google Voice Local Search lets you search for local businesses from any phone and for free. If you’re in the US, call 1-800-GOOG-411 and say what you want to find. Here are some of the features:

You can find a business listing by category. Just say “pizza,” for example.
* You can send the listing details to your mobile phone via SMS.
* The service is fully automated, so it doesn’t rely on human operators.
* It connects you directly to the business, free of charge.

Now that you have the 4-1-1, tell us how you used it in the comments!

Thanks to all the tipsters including SportsFan Dan, Cactusphone, Abkadefgee, Lifehacker on Google SMS Flight Info, and Lifehacker on Google 411. Got a tip for us, send it in to techlifetips [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.
