Techlife’s recent article about Digital Ethnography based on the video “Web 2.0 – The Machine is Us/ing Us” by Professor Michael Wesch has really blossomed garnering over 1.2 million views since our last article in February 2007, to total 2.2 million views and counting. The topic of information and the processing of it, certainly has become of interest to the readers of this column.
Recently the above video was sent to me by a loyal reader (Thanks Allan!) . Titled, “Did You Know; Shift Happens – Globalization; Information Age” this video by educator Karl Fisch, has had about 500,000 views so far. What do you think of it? I am really interested in reading your opinions of this video in comparison to the Web 2.0 video. I have reposted that video after the break. I am also interested in any personal stories with your feelings about globalization and the information waterfall we all encounter daily. Comment here. (more…)

Reader EmailsComments Off on Dear Cali: Part 1 of Behind the Techlife Curtain

A new header for DearCali.com?
A good friend of mine, Neal Campbell, producer of GeekBrief.TV recently asked me, “I know what you do, but what….do you do?” Most of you know me as Dave Kaufman, creator of Techlife. Let’s go behind the curtain in this multi-part column and I will give you a bit more about what I do. Today we cover design and branding.
Cue the time machine as the question above was not the start of our conversation. It all started when Neal asked if I could review a new site that was part of the GeekBrief.TV family, Dear Cali, a Tech Answers and Advice blog by Cali Lewis host of GeekBrief.TV. I get asked this all the time in Techlife. Now by review, he meant provide him feedback, make suggestions, critique and generally give an impression of this new site, some companies call it beta testing too. I wrote Neal a nice email pointing out various small and large observations, suggestions and even a new business idea!

SoftwareComments Off on New York to London – Step by Step Directions

Google Maps is a favorite around the Techlife offices. After our recent article on “Make Your own Google Maps” a long time friend and reader Cindy from Boston sent us the simple email outlining Google Maps directions from New York to London. We were a bit puzzled, until we followed her instructions. Here was the email tip we were sent:
DO THIS:
1. go to www.google.com
2. click on “maps”
3. click on “get directions”
4. type “New York” in the first box
5. type “London” in the second box
(hit get directions)
6. scroll down to step #23
ha ha ha ha
To lazy – we have saved the link from The Big Apple to Big Ben right here.
Got a tip for us, send it in to techlifetips [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

There’s a new free business networking group formed from a partnership between TechLife and inBubbleWrap. We are pleased to announce the winner of our “Name the Group” vote is BubHub, in what turned out to be a two-horse race between inBubbleNet and the eventual winner.
We now need the voters help again to choose the identity for BubHub. This badge will represent BubHub in various uses. There are three choices, please choose an identity that most resembles BubHub. Voting is open until Friday, March 16th at 530pm CT.
Let us know your which choice you voted for and why in the comments.

Reader EmailsComments Off on The Polls are Open: Name a Networking Group
Previously TechLife wrote about the Golden Rule of Business Networking, and how important it is to give first. We wrote this as part of an announcement that we were forming a free business networking group together with inBubbleWrap. We had a call for submissions to help name the group and the response was overwhelming, creative and brilliant. Even the naming ideas discussion was insightful.Thank You for all the great submissions.
We have narrowed down the list. Now we have a simple task, V-O-T-E-! We want our future networking group to vote on our name, it is after all, “our group” so “we” should name it. Here are the top 5 in no particular order:
- inBubble Connection
- BubHub
- inBubbleNet
- One Nation Under Bubble
- inBubblehead Network
After you vote, drop us a comment here so we can get a good straw poll for why you liked or disliked the candidates. Voting closes March 8, 2007 at 5:30pm CT.

Sports and RecreationComments Off on Skye Boyes of Stick Arena and XGen Studios

Today TechLife‘s friend Skye Boyes stopped by with some thoughts. Skye is the principal of XGen Studios, makers of Stick Arena, the popular Flash game we previously covered.
Skye was happy to see all the discussion from fans of Stick Arena. He wanted to clear up a few things about the game. I liked what he had to say so I am publishing it here as well for all to read.
I also wanted to mention publicly that the original post even had one person so enraged that they commented with death threats. Needless to say I chose to not post those.
Now on with Skye’s Thoughts:

Reader EmailsComments Off on iPhone unboxed Exclusive! – See an iPhone in the wild.

My un-named techidol friend just got his iPhone and was kind of enough to take a bunch of photos of the unboxing and email them to Techlife, exclusively!
He and I got our Sidekick’s on the same day; day 1. But he is an Apple fan, so I can understand his lust. (Why is there a windows PC in this shot I will never know?)
I was pretty shocked as Steve Jobs said they wouldn’t be out until June in the Keynote. But you VIPs tend to get them in advance.
Another photo after the jump…

Sports and RecreationComments Off on Daily Lit – Loved before it was blogged.
Back in November, Techlife shared Daily Lit with our inner circle, when I posted some beta testing comments for them. I continued using DailyLit. (More on that below the jump…)
First what is DailyLit? Their tagline sums it up best: “Too busy for books? Read them by e-mail.” What books you might ask? A lot. My last count was more than 250 titles. But here’s the smart thing, who wants “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy as a giant email attachment. It would be crazy! So Daily Lit breaks it down into manageable parts. Granted this literary work is broken down into 675 parts one of the largest but other books are quite a bit less.
The break down is your call. “Daily” is most common but you can accelerate that if you really like a book with a simple click.

The hipster PDA by Merlin Mann of 43folders.com fame dates back to September 2004. It has served many people very effectively but of course there is always room for improvement.
In August of 2006 Techlife’s column was about PocketMod.  PocketMod is a single sheet of paper created easily online and printed on a single sheet of paper. It’s unique feature is the wealth of modules the author created.Â
Techlife reader Matt, recently has been commenting on how he uses the PocketMod and how he plans on using it. I thought it was interesting and others might find it useful. Feel free to join the discussion.

Sat 1 Oct 2005
The recent explosion of email to techlife [at] dkworldwide dot com has been great. Thank you. I try to answer all the emails I get, and some are just interesting enough to get published.
Food for Katrina
Dear TechLife,
My son recently inquired about how to make the donated canned food for the Katrina victims taste good. I tried to explain that canned food is non-perishable, which was promptly replied to with, “you mean non-edible?†I decided to look online for good recipes to cook for him and there were a lot of sites, but I couldn’t find exactly what I needed. Any suggestions?
Hungrily yours,
Katie D.

Reader EmailsComments Off on Easy as 1, 2, 3. Right?

Techlife has some very smart readers. We get letters all the time from readers who ask technical questions, “how to†questions, and even the occasional praise for the column. Thank you to everyone. Nothing brightens my day more than getting email from people I have never met. (Though there are those pesky ex-kings around the world who insist my current career could be greatly enhanced by sharing in their millions.)
