Vote 2 by Steve WoodsEveryday you use many websites. But which of them are everyday websites?

Everyday websites are defined as sites you visit nearly everyday, often multiple times. Useful, fun, informative but most importantly not because someone sent you a link. Techlife is interested in the sites you choose to visit. (online applications count too.)
Google? Yahoo? MSN? Sure these are the most common. NYTimes? ESPN? Wikipedia? These are popular, too. But I am looking for the deeper, more interesting sites and the reasons.

I will post mine here:

 • Google Docs has become a regular for word processing and spreadsheets. I am constantly using it for collaboration with others.
 • FeedCrier to help me pick the best things to read via RSS. Lifehacker, Engadget and Gizmodo pop up pretty frequently.
 • I have been playing too much of Casual Collective’s Multi-Player Desktop Tower Defense. A lot of Techlife readers have joined me with a free invite.
 • I use SmartMoney’s portfolio tracking tools and sometimes Yahoo’s Finance tools to watch and learn about the economy and stock market.
 • I use Tmobile’s Sidekick Desktop Interface to manage my mobile Sidekick device’s online calendar, address book and notes applications. (no link available for general public, subscription only)
 • I watch and edit Techlife TV on Chime.tv. I often just browse other channels and watch for a while, like regular television.

I really want to know what sites everybody else uses and why. Post them in the comments.

Google Spreadsheets now with charts and graphs - Pie, Bar, Scatter and more

This year I happen to be a in few fantasy football leagues (not into fantasy sports, these same tools are used by my company everyday too, so keep reading.) These days most fantasy football leagues are managed online with any number of large and small websites doing the player tracking and record keeping. It makes drafting, managing and setting your lineup each week pretty easy. Last year my team won our league, no small thanks to LaDanian Tomlinson, as he smashed NFL records. Thanks LT.

Last year and again this year we used another often talked about tool, Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Most people in fantasy football prepare for the draft using a spreadsheet application like Excel. It helps sort their rankings of players based on their league’s specific scoring system, but doing it online has a few added benefits. All of which helped the 2006 Fantasy Football Champions prepare in their championship season and in this year’s title defense.

 • Auto-saving – While a seemingly small feature, since the document is saved every few seconds remotely, even when we lost power (which happened) we didn’t lose a single minute when power was restored as our data was safe and up-to-date
 • Revisions – A few times we realized in our prep that we had made a mistake copying and pasting a formula or row of formulas. Google Docs offers the chance to go back in time to review different saved versions of the documents along the way. This makes it easy to find the place the error was made and correct it.
 • Collaboration – No longer did we have to email big files and have a check in/out process. We just both started working even on the same sheet at the same time. This made all the difference when we had conference calls and needed to show different scenarios live to each other.

Will you win your fantasy league if you use Google Docs? No. Will it help? Yes. During the course of working another added benefit was when I was out of town, I was able to access my spreadsheets with ease. Fantasy Football is constantly changing and becoming more and more competitive with more players, more time is spent working on your “lists”. Make it easier on yourself, give Google Docs a try.

Do you have a winning story about using Google Docs and Spreadsheets? Share it with us.

Multi-player Desktop Tower Defense game play

Techlife has invites to the private Casual Collective, the casual gaming multi-player site we have been beta testing for a little while now.  To get one, comment and we will invite you.  This will get you a free invite to the Multi-player Desktop Tower Defense.

We even set up a Techlife Collective, that we would love if you join. (It is our little mini-group.)  You get to compete against all the other readers and still against everyone else too.  Paul and Dave have really thought of everything.  If you like Stick Arena or many of the other flash games we have covered, this is a must have invite.

I know I am addicted.  Who wants in? If you want a free invite just leave a comment and I will invite people first come first served.

Prof GilzotMost Techlife readers know I use Trillian for instant messaging because we have covered them before. I have also mentioned AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) bots when I wrote about FeedCrier. An AIM bot is a buddy you add to your buddy list but instead of a real person the bot is a computer that can answer questions, usually with a tight focus. AIM Bots are available wherever you can IM including the iPhone.

A great example of this is AOLYellowPages, a bot that lets you pull up nationwide (USA) listings with a few quick pecks to the keyboard. People love this bot, which was recently in retirement refinement and not-delivering any results. I am happy to report it is back.

We recently caught up with Bill Herred who is the guy-behind-the-guy of Prof Gilzot, a new AIM bot for SAT Prep, targeted towards high school students. He is also behind IM Street a stock focused AIM Bot.

DE-FENSE! DE-FENSE!

For those unfamiliar with Desktop Tower Defense, it is a simple concept stop the circles from traversing across the playing field. As with most great games, its simplicity is compelling while its mastery is more than a challenge.

Since version 1.5 has been released, as seen on the Prepare to meet your next challenge in casual multi-player gaming, Multi-Player Desktop Tower Defense (MDTD) from Casual Collective. Casual Collective Logo

I have just taken a break finished playing one of the most addictive multi-player Flash games since Stick Arena in order to write about the new, invite only beta trial.

The game is a bunch of mini-races that culminate in an overall winner based on score. The new angle is now your “Defense” is not just against circles but also against your live opponents who can in one game mode use Super Powers, special powers including Lights Out (blacks out your board for a few seconds) or Gold-lock (which stops the spending of gold for a few seconds.) I played in arcade mode which speeds up the gameplay and leaves little time for in-game chat or taunting.

Raise your hand if Stick Arena or Line Rider are were your favorite time wasters? A new game has taken center stage, Desktop Tower Defense.

It’s quite simple, yet grows in complexity. You are defending against invading circles each with special powers such as speed, morphing and spawning. The circles goal is to cross the desktop. Your goal: Stop them! The best thing about this game are all the variations and how easily no two games could be alike. In addition the author Paul Preece has added many various types of levels and challenges to the game. The game is often talked about online with bloggers providing strategy and even covering Desktop Tower Defense’s advertising partners. Get practicing now.

Why the rush? Paul has teamed with Dave to create Casual Collective and they have something new up their sleeve. Just announced is their goal to have multi-player Desktop Tower Defense and other multi-player gaming. Register your username now.

Google Docs and Spreadsheets new main interface

Techlife logged into Google Docs and found a brand new interface. We have been using online collaborative word processing and spreadsheets more and more with clients and among the staff, so this was a nice find.

Google Docs has changed a lot since we last wrote about them. But the recent few changes have really put some polish on these tools.

Two of the newest changes are:

 • Looking pretty – The entire document list has been given a complete visual overhaul – new icons, more content, and better organizational controls. We know users spend a lot of time here and we aim to make it feel more like home.
 • Getting organized – Almost from the day we launched people have been clamoring for folders. They’re here! Even cooler, our new folders continue to work like the tags they’ve replaced – your old tags are automatically converted to folders and documents can live in more than one folder at a time. Organizing your documents is as easy as dragging and dropping a document to a folder. We’ve also included special controls for seeing only those documents created by you or shared with a particular person.

I also like the “drag and drop” interface that we are already comfortable using in a desktop interface for managing the documents on the main page. Google has cleaned up the ease of using the site. The added some new search technology (wonder where they thought of that!)

Google Spreadsheets now with charts and graphs - Pie, Bar, Scatter and more

Previously the Google Docs team did added snazzy chart support in Spreadsheets. Check out the ease of creating and maintaining your pie, bar, scatter and more types of charts and graphs.

So Google Docs is “Getting Better All the Time” as The Beatles sang.

books, books by Sanja Gjenero

Techlife 1
It’s official, I just completed my first entire book via email, thanks to Daily Lit. Daily Lit is a favorite of Techlife, allowing readers to be sent small pieces of books via email on a schedule for free. We paused our novel when the workload got heavy and then resumed after sometime. It’s on to book two, which is only about 1/3 the size.

Daily Lit 1+

The day we finished our first book, the folks at Daily Lit also released a bunch of new features worth mentioning. Email length can be controlled to offer longer installments. The schedule can be a little less “daily”, with options for once a week. For our French and Italian readers new books are going up in these languages and a new RSS feed for “new books” is available.

They have released a few other features, such as subscribe via RSS instead of email and a “what I’m reading” tool, called a Book Roll. They also have added a variety of other written words, such as poetry and books released in the creative commons.

Finally don’t feel bad about stopping a book, or only having read a few so far. Albert who maintains the Daily Lit blog, has only completed 2 and is working on his third. Remember this is not about speed, but about enjoying stories that have shaped the world we live in and influence a lot of the other art, movies, television and video games we see today.

Chime.tv's player screen allows you to easily navigate videos in many genres.

Have you ever wanted to program your own tv station? Now you can. Chime.tv, is the creation of Chirag Mehta and Taylor McKnight. The premise is simple, make video sites like Blip TV, Break.com, Daily Motion, Google Video, MetaCafe, MySpace, Veoh, & YouTube all available in one place.

Chime.tv Logo Chime.tv added a few other bells and whistles, such as the ability to create and program your own channel. Here is Techlife TV, a channel composed of videos we have blogged and others that Chime.tv helped us find.

They also have created a television like experience with videos grouped by subject matter, which is nice for finding what you want quickly and easily. Of course Chime.tv’s powerful search tools also make it easy to find very specific videos by subject or all the videos from a single website. (though it should let you create a channel from your search easily. feature request)

Thanks to Chime.tv I saw a lot of video that was entertaining and informative and just what I was looking for in web video service. Be sure to check out the video of a cell phone salesman singing Nessun Dorma, an opera, on Britain’s “You’ve Got Talent with Simon Cowell.” It was really amazing. If you find any great videos or make a great Chime.tv channel post here so we can all watch.

Overall: Chime.tv makes video easy and television like. It is a sure winner. Bookmark it.

Thanks to Techcrunch for the original

Bauns by Ferry HalimAs our readers know, Techlife believes in work hard, play hard. We often cover fun toys. Clearly our readers agree that games are important in their life too. Some of the most popular past topics here are based on Stick Arena and Line Rider. Other staff favorites are games like Chick Chick Boom and Guess the Google.
Today we bring you Bauns (translated to English it means Bounce). This game has a short learning curve and is quickly addictive (consider yourself warned.) You control a catapult-like launcher that can send a ball airborne. As it lands it erases any balls of the same color that are touching the color it lands on. Simple. Of course the designer Ferry Halim, threw a few tricks our way. There is a special timer ball and a color morphing ball, hit either of these two and special things start to happen to your board.

Our current high score is 16,622, which I suspect some of readers to quickly surpass. Post your high scores below. Do you like this game let us know?

Overall: Bauns is well crafted, with an easy to understand control system, just a mouse. I would have liked to see more special blocks that would cause havoc to the gameboard.

Call for submissions: Got a game that you love? Let us know and we will consider reviewing it. Tell us about it at: reviewmygame [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

I know Skye Boyes and his team at XGen Studios are hard at work on Stick Arena Ballistick.  But after reading this article on Microsoft taking a hard stance against hackers on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, I think Skye might devote some resources to the current generation of Stick Arena, a great game that people love to play.

I am a big fan and had been busy lately. I was looking forward to spending a break from reality in a quick multi-player browser game. Stick Arena is of course the best. I spent maybe all of 2 minutes in each arena, and constantly was dealing with hackers popping in and ruining my time. Eventually I just left, which is sad. We all want the next generation of gaming to get here soon from XGen, but not at the risk of losing gamers with the current product.

Skye and his team make their money from serving me ads, and I can tell you that I am less likely to sit and watch ads and play Stick Arena with the recent increase in hacking. It used to be tolerable, you report the hacker, leave the arena and move on to the next arena. Now the hackers seem to outnumber the non-hackers. Inmates running the asylum? I don’t think so. What do you think? Join the discussion.

Thanks to Engadget for making me aware of Microsoft’s stance.

New York to London with Google Maps

Google Maps is a favorite around the Techlife offices.  After our recent article on “Make Your own Google Maps” a long time friend and reader Cindy from Boston sent us the simple email outlining Google Maps directions from New York to London. We were a bit puzzled, until we followed her instructions.  Here was the email tip we were sent:

DO THIS:

1. go to www.google.com
2. click on “maps”
3. click on “get directions”
4. type “New York” in the first box
5. type “London” in the second box
(hit get directions)
6. scroll down to step #23

ha ha ha ha

To lazy – we have saved the link from The Big Apple to Big Ben right here.

Got a tip for us, send it in to techlifetips [at] dkworldwide [dot] com.

Chick Chick Boom Title Screen - Easy to play, and learn.

Techlife was lucky enough to land a Wii, (not that you would know since we have been so busy playing we haven’t reported on it yet. Shame on us.) But thanks to the Wii we have been reading the blog, Nintendo Wii Fanboy for our latest news. And boy do they pump out a lot.

Recently they covered a really cool game that is super addictive NOT FOR the Wii, but for your browser. I will repeat that this small game is super addictive, that’s your warning. Meet Chick Chick Boom, a game where you control air, ground and chemical warefare attacks on baby chicks. Sound too gruesome? Well it isn’t.

Chick Chick Boom Gameplay screen - Notice the elephants, how funny is that?

You likely have already seen the graphics with this article to see that the chicks are cute little circles. This game all about cute. From falling elephants to giving the chicks hard hats. The fast paced, easy to learn gameplay and light and airy soundtrack make it really addictive. Basically you just trace shapes in your defense or offense area and that determines what your attack or defense will be on the opposing chicks.

I quickly cruised through the first 10 levels and then in my first pro game I scored 12. I don’t really have a benchmark, so please post your high scores in Pro Mode of Chick Chick Boom.

The map of Techlife's trip from Chicago to Memphis to St. Louis.Thinking of visiting all the baseball parks on the North East Coast? It’s a trip that many baseball fans would love to make. But where to start? Beginning today you can start at your friendly, neighborhood Google. Google, the current mapping king, is releasing an add-on to their popular maps tool, Google’s MyMaps.

The itinerary of Techlife's trip to see Elvis, caves and Busch StadiumI whipped up a driving trip you could make this summer from Chicago to Memphis to Stanton, MO to St. Louis. Check it out. If you want to see Elvis, Graceland, caves, Budweiser, the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium it’s all planned and thanks to Google’s MyMaps feature ready for you now. It was easy to use and took about 15 minutes from start to finish to get it all working.

Techlife had previously mentioned how cool Flash Earth was, I would love to see Paul Neave tackle MyFlashEarth next. Can he do it?

List your Google MyMaps in the comments, here and we will see who has some cool ideas.
