Sports and RecreationComments Off on Chick Chick Boom – Baby Chick gaming warfare at its best

Techlife was lucky enough to land a Wii, (not that you would know since we have been so busy playing we haven’t reported on it yet. Shame on us.) But thanks to the Wii we have been reading the blog, Nintendo Wii Fanboy for our latest news. And boy do they pump out a lot.
Recently they covered a really cool game that is super addictive NOT FOR the Wii, but for your browser. I will repeat that this small game is super addictive, that’s your warning. Meet Chick Chick Boom, a game where you control air, ground and chemical warefare attacks on baby chicks. Sound too gruesome? Well it isn’t.

You likely have already seen the graphics with this article to see that the chicks are cute little circles. This game all about cute. From falling elephants to giving the chicks hard hats. The fast paced, easy to learn gameplay and light and airy soundtrack make it really addictive. Basically you just trace shapes in your defense or offense area and that determines what your attack or defense will be on the opposing chicks.
I quickly cruised through the first 10 levels and then in my first pro game I scored 12. I don’t really have a benchmark, so please post your high scores in Pro Mode of Chick Chick Boom.

“Barcodes for houses?” Everyone’s been shopping a big box, where the cashiers are miles from you in the front of the store, the employees are all on their 2 hour lunch break at the same time no where to be found and you need to know how much this Transformers: The Movie: The Board Game is for your nephew. So what did the big boxes install, mobile scanners. Basically you walk up scan the barcode of your item and it reads or announces the price.

Well Housefront just made price-checking a home easy. Even better is they allow you to do it when you need to: checking house prices with your mobile is the perfect application. (USA only for now). I mean how often are you out and see a for sale sign but don’t have your computer with you? Using it was simple.
As Lifehacker notes:
…just text the street address to HOUSE (46873). In a minute you’ll get back a text message listing the year the house was built, the square footage, the number of baths/bedrooms, and the estimated price.
Lifehacker and Techlife also agree that it is much easier than Zillow’s mobile app for the same purpose. I will take it one step farther. Housefront provided way more information in the SMS reply. Now the real question is accuracy, input a home you know and let us know how accurate they are?
Update 1: Housefront blogged about another cool feature today. Automated search history. Basically by using their service via texting your mobile number creates an account of all the homes you viewed while you were out house shopping. When you get back to your PC all the data from your searches are saved for your research/browsing.

SoftwareComments Off on The Joost is Loost

Joost contacted me today! Apparently the Beta has gone widespread. Want an invite? Make a comment here. I will report more as soon as I have more.
Note: Comments have closed for this article. Please see our Techlife’s Joost Invite Contest article.
Hello Dave,
The waiting’s over! Since we received your application to join the Joost
beta test program, we’ve been very busy fine-tuning it for you.
So here’s some good news: we’re now ready to expand our beta test
program, and we’re delighted to invite you to join us.
You can download the Joost software right away, by clicking on the link
below. You’ll find instructions for installing and running the software
on our download pages.
Get Joost here: {sorry had to erase this}
Before you can watch Joost for the first time, you need to choose a user
name and password. We’ve provided instructions for doing this on the
screens you’ll see the first time you run the software. So hurry – this
is still beta software and it’s not available to the general public yet,
so this is your opportunity to get the user name you want ahead of the
crowd!
Thanks for your patience in waiting for Joost. We hope you’ll enjoy
using it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.
Cheers,
The Joost team

Thinking of visiting all the baseball parks on the North East Coast? It’s a trip that many baseball fans would love to make. But where to start? Beginning today you can start at your friendly, neighborhood Google. Google, the current mapping king, is releasing an add-on to their popular maps tool, Google’s MyMaps.
I whipped up a driving trip you could make this summer from Chicago to Memphis to Stanton, MO to St. Louis. Check it out. If you want to see Elvis, Graceland, caves, Budweiser, the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium it’s all planned and thanks to Google’s MyMaps feature ready for you now. It was easy to use and took about 15 minutes from start to finish to get it all working.
Techlife had previously mentioned how cool Flash Earth was, I would love to see Paul Neave tackle MyFlashEarth next. Can he do it?
List your Google MyMaps in the comments, here and we will see who has some cool ideas.

Trust me you will thank Techlife later that you didn’t know about this site until after the tournament started. Poologic is a web site run by Tom Adams with the mission of:
This site is dedicated to helping you win your college basketball tournament office pool.
The NCAA March Madness Tournament always brings about stories about infallible systems for winning your office pool but this one takes the cake. Since you have all sorts of stories such as the one I heard on the radio about a little girl who picket Florida last year since she was going to Disneyworld later that spring, it is only fitting you have all sorts of websites providing advice on winning.
After finding the story titled, Web Site Uses Math to Pick NCAA Winners from the Associated Press on, I thought wow this is it…until you read the whole thing…

Sometimes you need to plan a last-minute trip fast, as Techlife wrote about in “How to Win The Amazing Race.” But more often than not leisure travel allows you to research your destination. Today’s traveler will use quite a wide range of resources, we recently covered one such in video travel research. But the bottom line is as TechCrunch details, airline costs still are a huge bulk of the cost.

SoftwareComments Off on Simplicity + Chat Bot + RSS = FeedCrier

Readers of Techlife know I use a Sidekick 3 for my mobile email, phone and web. But I also use it for the great AOL Instant Messaging or AIM service it provides. Instant messaging is quick back and forth text snippets, like an SMS message. While chatting with a live friend or colleague is useful, there is another type of chat, chatting with a “Bot”. An AIM bot typically provides various types of information as requested by the user, such as a phone number of a local business or the weather in a specific area.
I have been beta testing FeedCrier, an RSS reader built into an AIM bot. It also works on MSN, Jabber and Google Talk. Wow! That’s a lot of mumbo-jumbo, so let’s simplify it. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and that refers to the code that allows easy and free subscription to blogs, web pages, and other data on the internet. FeedCrier by developer Adam Kalsey takes something simple in Instant Messaging and combines it with a popular format in RSS and the result is elegant yet easy.

Reader EmailsComments Off on The Polls are Open: Name a Networking Group
Previously TechLife wrote about the Golden Rule of Business Networking, and how important it is to give first. We wrote this as part of an announcement that we were forming a free business networking group together with inBubbleWrap. We had a call for submissions to help name the group and the response was overwhelming, creative and brilliant. Even the naming ideas discussion was insightful.Thank You for all the great submissions.
We have narrowed down the list. Now we have a simple task, V-O-T-E-! We want our future networking group to vote on our name, it is after all, “our group” so “we” should name it. Here are the top 5 in no particular order:
- inBubble Connection
- BubHub
- inBubbleNet
- One Nation Under Bubble
- inBubblehead Network
After you vote, drop us a comment here so we can get a good straw poll for why you liked or disliked the candidates. Voting closes March 8, 2007 at 5:30pm CT.

InformationalComments Off on Business Networking and Business Books – All in One
Business networking is the key to many successful business relationships. TechLife is constantly networking. We learned early on that the golden rule of networking is give of yourself first and expect nothing in return. Karma has a funny way of working things out.
I have blogged in the past about DailyLit a site for avid readers via email. But I am also an avid reader of business books as I find I get great insight that can help my clients in planning their business strategy, marketing or technology projects. Thanks to inBubbleWrap.com, I have learned, won, and read some great business books.
I was thinking how great it would be to meet other business book readers and network with them. Together with inBubbleWrap, we have started a free networking project that is just kicking off . If you want to increase your business network this simple and free network will be a great asset to meet smart, well-read people in business.
If you want to get involved the first thing we are doing is naming the group. Submit our new group name and we will then vote to decide the best one. Post any questions or comments.

Since the beginning of time, not matter your race, religion, background, the people of Earth have a few things in common. One is that we all have a family. You can make your arguments how there is no way you are related to Sloth, your third cousin on your mom’s side, but you know deep down you are. Geni.com (said genie, as in Genealogy) can help you track down the family you know and more importantly the family you don’t know.

Sports and RecreationComments Off on Guess the Google – Warning!! Highly Addictive
Sometimes the simplest game is the best. Our friend SapiensBryan from Latest Hi Tech News, who you may remember from the Flat Panel LCD TV in 1 step, posted a link to a highly addictive game by Grant Robinson called Guess the Google.
The instructions are easy. You will be shown a montage of images that would show up if you typed in a query into Google Images. You can guess as many times as you want in 20 seconds. Guess the word get points and a bonus based on speed. There are 10 rounds. So simple, yet highly addictive.
*SPOILER ALERT* Here’s my hints
- Glance at the images as a whole you might get the right answer fast.
- No luck with the glance method? Look closely at a few you might see the word in the images.
- Still no luck, play again, I got a few words repeated in successive games and was able to get those fast.

InformationalComments Off on Ze Frank not the LOA Leader (correction)

Ze Frank mocks reads Techlife?
Ok, so maybe we are being a bit narcissistic here, but in the February 13, 2007 episode of The Show with Ze Frank, (a really informative show with tons of inside jokes) at 0:39 sec he says:
The other day I read somewhere that someone thought I was the head of the LOA. (League of Awesomeness.) Me! I am just finishing the internship and I haven’t even started to write a book about nothing.
Now we know that this is like 15 degrees of Kevin Bacon but follow this humor us…we posted the Look Shiny post on February 9, 2007 (the other day?) where we said (Ze read?):
…the League of Awesomeness and its leader Power Mover (and Shaker) Ze Frank…
Ze obviously Not bloody likely! reads Techlife and was too polite to ask for a retraction. Well we get it, so here it goes:
Mr. Frank please excuse the reporting and fact checking, we know in this age of Internet Journalism any talking head can pop up and claim to have done their research. In the case of mistaken titling we apologize for referring to you as Leader of the League of Awesomeness as we have learned directly that you are in fact just an intern at this time. We offer our deepest apologies at this error to both you and your organization. We further hope that this gaffe does not impede your quest for entry into this elite organization. Furthermore we hope not just have gained a reader but a friend.
Do you have further thoughts on the Internet and information accuracy? Please comment on it.

Watch the video Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us by Kansas State University Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology Michael Wesch. In his blog he covers a bit more in depth on the various aspects of this unique view of the world. He is quoted as writing:
My videos explore mediated culture, seeking to merge the ideas of Media Ecology and Cultural Anthropology.
Professor Wesch introduced me to the phrase Digital Ethnography. Wikipedia defines Ethnography as “people writing.” A bit more complex definition appears to be writing that describes human social phenomena using both qualitative and quantitative descriptions intertwined to best explain the observations. It is used often in anthropology.
By extrapolation Digital Ethnography could be described as understanding the way humans use digital forms of expression to interact using a combination of modern delivery mechinisms and mediums.
René Descartes said, “I think, therefore I am.”
Professor Wesch might say, “You create, therefore we create.”
And I get the easy line of, “Cool Video.”
I explain daily to clients that reaching out to create lets others reach out to you, thanks to Professor Wesch for showing the history leading to Web 2.0.
